I'm doing a report on melanin and this is one of the questions I have to answer. I'm getting plenty of information from the net, but most of it is just saying the same stuff over and over again. In order for my report to be a great one I'd really like a variety of stuff too look at so I have more information to go on. Also I'd LOVE to know where you got your information from so I may have a look and see if I can get anything else out of it. Thanks people!!

In humans, melanin is found in skin, hair, the pigmented epithelium underlying the retina, the medulla and zona reticularis of the adrenal gland, the stria vascularis of the inner ear, and in pigment bearing neurons of certain deep brain nuclei such as the locus ceruleus and the substantia nigra.

Dermal melanin is produced by melanocytes, which are found in the stratum basale of the epidermis. Although human beings generally possess a similar concentration of melanocytes in their skin, the melanocytes in some individuals and races more frequently or less frequently express the melanin-producing genes, thereby conferring a greater or lesser concentration of skin melanin. Some individual animals and humans have no or very little melanin in their bodies, which is a condition known as albinism.

The problem with having unique information on things like this is that unless what you want to say is completely made up, it's going to be the same. We all know that capital of the U.S. is Washingtion D.C. You can't make that fact "great" unless you write of a lot of BS about it. So, simply for a good report look for some facts or information you need for this melanin project, organize them, and have "big"(e.g. instead of small say miniscule" words in the report.

Where Is Melanin Produced

Melanin is indeed produced in the skin. The skin produces more as it is exposed to sunlight. It absorbs those nasty ultraviolet rays that give us that great, desired, pre-cancerous glow. It is it's way of saying, "don't kill me".

Not every skin cell produces melanin. Those that do share with cell around it. If those cells do not share as well as 'normal' skin cells it is called 'freckles'.

Yes, some people have more than others, giving them darker skin and hair, and usually eyes

A few extras.
