I want to create a fictional world, and have it set in a feudal setting. Sort of like a fantasy book without the fantasy. Swords, quests and the like, but it follows one man on the quest for vengeance. I have a general plpot, but how do I come up with details, characters and events? What is a good way to start?

The best way to learn the trade is to mingle with other, more experienced, writers. Some on-line forums are very supportive of new writers. Here are two that I frequent and which I recommend. Both require you to register.

There is a good fantasy writers forum hosted by the publishers Harper Collins at http://www.voyageronline.com.au/community/ under Messages and Writers Forum where you can post your work and get feedback from many published authors, as well as chat about all things writing.

Another excellent place to post work for free critiques is www.critters.org. To participate you must critique other writers work in exchange for their critiques of yours. You generally get 10-30 critiques of each story you post. It's a fantastic way to get feedback as well as to see new work and learn what works and what doesn't. Only need do one 300+ word critique per week to maintain membership. Your work joins the queue when you post it and takes 4-6 weeks to be assessed.

Go for it!

You have to do research on the time period in which your story is set.

Go to your local library and check out books on your subject.

You are going to need to know everything you can about swords, clothing, the words people used in that time period, how people lived, relevant events from the time period.

Take very detailed notes. The more realistic you can make your story, the better chance you'll have at selling it to a publisher when it's complete.

Base your characters on people you know. Observe them closely. Then ask yourself, how would they behave if they were in your fictional situation? What would they say?

Best of Luck!

1. Take a course of creative writing
2. If you are any good then write your novel
3. Find a publisher

Make sure your story is readable. I read a lot and I can tell you if the first few sentences of a novel don't grab me I will give it a miss altogether.

You will need to do a lot of research which could be fun.. Just start reading everything and anything you can and get a feel for the era and place you want to create - then fit your characters into it..

The best way to begin is an original idea. Hope you have one soon.
