I'd suggest Birthworks or Bradley instead of Lamaze.

I'd also suggest a class taught by an independent childbirth instructor over a hospital class. Hospital classes teach you to be a good patient. Instead, you want to learn to be an informed consumer. An out of hospital class is less likely to feel like a big waste of time and more likely to teach you something. Then just see if you can schedule a tour of the hospital if you aren't familiar with the facility.

You should FINISH your classes about 1-2 months before you are due. Find out when the different classes start and then what the FINAL class date is, and base your decision on that.

I was told to have them completed 4 weeks prior to your due date, just in case you go early. Most classes are either 4 or 6 weeks long so plan it out so your last class is 4 weeks away from your due date. It is never too early to enroll since some classes fill up quickly and you want to make sure to get into one that works well with your schedule. To be honest with you though, my husband and I found the classes to be a big waste of time and money and I wish we would've skipped them. This is our first pregnancy so I insisted that we sign up (my husband didn't think we really needed to) but I don't feel that it was very beneficial in the end. Your experience might be much different though.

I enrolled super early in the class because of vacations conflicts - probably around 28-30 weeks or so, but there were several people in my class who waited until 34 wks or so and didn't make it through all the classes... So, somewhere in there....
