i run instantcopy the computer is a pentium 4 laptop and it will shut off or freeze when burning dvds. It also shuts off occasionally for no reason ive scanned for viruses using avg and norton ive used trojan hunter other spyware devises. It will also not restart to a earlier save point either and i have save points established. the fans run almost all the time and i regulary blow all the dust out when it is shut off. I thought it might be overheating but it has been working fine burning dvd for over a year and now it shuts off alot. like today when i was running the updated antivirus. Your help is much appreciated.

I had a wife like that, once. Almost everytime we got warm, happy, or passionate, she would shut down, cool off, freeze up,
I also had one that you could never shut off.
There doesn't seem to be a mid-point to women. Could it be the hormones? Now I have one who runs the fans all the time!
Doctor has her on anti-virus meds, and they just called today about some kinda update to them, so I have to take her in tomorrow!
I run Linux on my computers, as it has no virus definitions.
I also have virus proof Macs. Both run about 50X faster than any Microsoft system... More stable than Microsoft, and, in fact, most women I have known... But, every one was a really great dearheart...
Hey, you can get your computer running true, at least long enough to prove it to be the hardware, or an unstable Operating System! download the FREE Linux, boot the LiveCDrom, and let 'er run for a few hours.
IF it runs true, then the problem is the Operating System, a virus, or gremlins in the hard drive! http://pclinuxos.com

Getting an Apple is not going to make these problems go away. Apple users have their own issues to contend with.
It sounds to me like your laptop is indeed overheating. The fact that your "fans are running all the time" pretty much tells me that you're laptop is burning up.
My laptop has 2 fans in it. 1 is a vent fan and runs at low speed all the time, and 1 is a cpu fan that only runs when it is hot. The vent fan and the CPU fan both have 2 speeds. Low, and OMFG High.
The cpu fan is almost never on because I don't block the vents on my laptop by sitting it directly on my lap or other soft surfaces that will block the vents.
I use an aluminum cooling pad I bought from Newegg for 20 bucks, so the Laptop has not only 2 more fans helping to keep it running cool, it also has the Aluminum which is a great heatsink in and of itself.
People who don't use a T.V. Tray when using their laptop in bed, or often set their laptop on soft surfaces like a Lap or a Couch cushion, etc. Are going to see overheating problems.
My guess is your laptop is frying in it's own case because it is not getting adequet ventillation.
DVD Burners emit a lot of heat when they are burning. They need lots of ventillation.

does it shut off even when on power mode (since you are talking of a laptop, your battery could be drained)
There is a possibility that you need a new laptop battery, or that your DVD-rom has some technical problems affecting the whole laptop.
for every laptop manufacturer, they have service centers, call the one nearest you and describe to them your problem. insist on trying to fix it over the phone (since it could be software related too), but if not, then there is no choice but to bring the unit to the service center.
