The Panama Canal is now controlled by Panama. Control was transferred to them by the USA at 12 noon on December 31, 1999. The canal was started by the French on January 1, 1880. The French abandoned the effort in 1893 after the death of an estimated 22,000 workers. The USA under Theodore Roosevelt bought the French equipment and excavations and began work 1904. A major investment was made in disease control reducing the American deaths to 5,609 for a total death toll of about 27,500. The canal was formally opened on August 15, 1914 with the transit of the cargo ship Ancon.
