Libraries won't take them if they are over 5 years old. A used book store might buy them from you. A homeless shelter wouldn't be good because peoplecan usually only stay overnight, then be gone in the morning. They might sell on ebay. do a search and see if some are listed and how much they are going for. If you just want to give them away to a good ome check out freecycle.org then click on the area closest to you. At freecycle. you post things that you want to give away.Someone answers your post and they contact you about them coming and picking them up from you. That way, you don't have to pay for a ad or postage. You can also post if you are looking for someting. If someone has that item to give away, they answer your post and you arrange to pick it up from them. This organization has helped a lot of people again that is www.freecycle.org .

You can sell them on E-bay if thye are in goodcondition or give thenm to the local liberary (which is what I do.) you can get a receipt for them as a donation for taxes if you wish. or give them to the salvation army or goodwill.

Contrary to what some people think encylopedias that old have a good historical value, and you may be able top sell them if they are in giood shape. There a lot of information in them you canot get now. Like one th eSoviet Union, East Germany among others.
Check with antieque book stores, or online. But it's likely someone on ebay will buy them.
