Because they want to be part of society and also do their own thing. They desperately want to fit in (or they feel great pressure from society, institutions, family, whatever.) But they're torn because they want to do something different--something wrong, something socially unacceptable, something they know is right, but it's unpopular.

So instead of having the balls to have an opinion and stick to it, they say one thing in public and do another thing in secret. People are weak. So weak. But they won't even own up to being weak! So society remains a stupid place that breeds hypocrisy because people who KNOW that its rules can't be kept lie and say that they actually do what society commands. So society stays impossible and people remain liars and hypocrisy is born and maintained and...what a downer.

But it's true. So be honest! Society will, um, thank you? Thank you in the long run? Burn you at the stake? I don't know. But hypocrites wear me out and I hate hypocrisy more than most venial sins. Hypocrisy SUCKS. So be honest.

Good question, by the way.

Hypocrisy is done by people, who either really don't practice what they preach or who conceal what they are or what they do for the sake of conformity.

People are hypocrites because they want to conform to the standards of a society, or even a small group for that matter.

People always like having to make BIG of themselves whenever they can, even if it means lying to themselves.

The bottomline is: If your words do not coincide with your actions, then you are a hypocrite.

Some people know the difference between acceptable behavior and unacceptable behavior but still have issues and problems applying it to their life.

For instance, most people who smoke know it is bad for you and recommend that you don't start, yet they will light up right after telling you not to start smoking.

So, it's much easier for most people to talk or be judge-mental about behavior rather than put it into action. They don't live by the age-old proverb that "actions speak louder than words."

How. If it is true we a born perfectionists, that we are negative in primary nature and learning after the value for positive action, then our first condition is hypocrisy. Defects are usually identified, rightly or wrongly, as something external or outside our self, or our will, and we return to the external to blame.

All disagreeable human actions stem from this preexisting condition.

People who don't "go with the flow" are often attacked. Easier to say one thing and do as you please, some think.

You just get tired of being attacked,
