Are you supposed to lift weights everyday or everyother day? I heard its not good to lift everyday b/c it tears your muscle away and you wont gain any muscle, but if you lift every other day you give the muscle time to heal and therefore you will build muscle. Is this the same when you workout your legs with wieghts; do you do it every day or every other day?

You are not supposed to work the same muscle group every day.

You can work upper body one day & lower body the next. I try to work lower body Monday, Wednesday & Friday and work upper body Tuesday, Thursday & maybe Saturday.

My boyfriend does a whole body workout Monday Wednesday & Friday.

You could also alternate between lifting weights one day & an aerobic workout the next.

"It tears your muscles away" is a gross exageration! Lifting weights puts stress on your muscles creating "micro-damage." It is the repair of this "damage" that actually builds muscle & strength. If you do not allow enough repair time, you will severly limit muscle growth.

Everyother day. Trust me on that- if you really working out you wont be able to lift the following day.

I tried lifting everyday, but I started to get small brusies and blisters on my index fingers from lifting the bar. Not a good idea.

I personally work my calfs everyday.. Some men have different makeups-some have calfs higher up on the leg, which = less muscle buildup capability.

*No pain no gain.. Hold breathe when lifting the weight and breathe really fast for 2 seconds on the way down. Repeat!

There are people that work 1 muscle group only ONCE A WEEK!!!! When I have hit plateaus, I've tried this and it does work. It works mostly because I have sometimes overtrained, thus causing my muscles to NOT grow anymore. REST REST REST is the key. Try working out when your muscles do NOT feel sore. It may be every other day, it may be every four days. Everyone will give you a different answer, listen to your muscles.

I'll go with option "c". Yes, you are correct in saying that you want to give muscle time to heal after you have torn it up. But the point is: don't tear up the same muscles day after day. Muscle cycles are 5-7 days, so you should rotate your workout targeting different body areas.

If you lift chest every day or every other day, you are still preventing the torn muscle from fulling repairing and rebuilding. That is, in effect, running in place.

In a nut shell, do not over excercise your muscles. Each muscle should be excercised 2-3 times a week, never exceed 3 times. Give each set of muscles a 2 day break because the muscle needs to recover in order to grow. The actual muscle build up takes place during recovery, contrary to popular belief.

If your muscles are sore, this means, they are recovering, so give them a break till there is no pain. Experienced athletes need less time for their muscles to recover, so if you are a beginner, just listen to your body, if it hurts, do not excercise it even if that means not excercising that muscle for a week.

It is better to lift every other day. Three days a week work well. Some people that lift every day work out upper body one day and lower body the next.
