Why does the Republican party not know how to form a coherent sentence?

Any tax that is distributed evenly across all social economic groups base on consumption is perceived to be a burden to lower middle class and poor people. The Democrats concept is that rich people should pay a higher percentage of tax than lower wage earners. A consumption tax or sales tax would be the same for everyone for each dollar spent and that just isn't fair in their minds.

Because the parties have switch places. The demcrats used to be the ones who would tax and spend, and fight for freedom around the world. Now it's the Republicans.

I guess the new Democratic party will be fiscal conservatives. They might as well be, as the Republicans have certainly blown the budget.

Sales Taxes are usually perceived as being regressive rather than progressive. As such, people who make less money are disproptionally affected by sales taxes. It is perceived as be so because one who makes less money would pay a greater percentage of their income in sales taxes than somebody who makes more. The theory being that there are minimum amounts of spending that people must do in order to live -- e.g. people have to buy food, clothing, etc.

The theory also goes that people who make more would invest and save more vs. consume and pay taxes. Yeah, right.

Intuitively, one would think that it IS fair given everybody pays a portion of what they buy. People who make more, spend more, so they pay more taxes.

It would also depend on if anything is exempted from sales tax-- e.g. food, medicines, clothing, etc. And if so, how much.

Because it's regressive - it falls most heavily on poor people. Rich people actually spend a smaller portion of their income on items for which they have to spend sales tax.

Dems believe that the heaviest tax burden should fall on the people most able to afford it, i.e. the rich people, unlike Bush, who rightly said that his constituency was "the haves, and the have-mores."

You need to give more info, on top of a state sales tax?

It's simple. It would take BILLIONS of dollars in cold cash out of the pockets of politicians.
Nothing more.
