According to an article in the 2006 Colorado Springs Sky Sox program, about 9% of players in short-season A-ball ever make it to the majors - or 91% who never make it. Most high school players actually start in the minors a level lower, in what's called Rookie level, and at that level the percentage is probably worse. So, when your friend said that only 80% fail, he was being optimistic.

About 1 in 10,000 high school players make it to the major leagues. This is of course a rough estimate but I'm sure it's close. I have know the best players in Nassau County, Long Island, NY, population 1.4 million, who were at the top of their game on the high school level, even college level, but never got passed Double AA play in the minors. It takes a truly gifted athlete to make the pros.

There are talented people out there that make it.
There are people who I wonder how they made it.

I guess it's basically just luck. Whether or not there's an agent around, whether or not you're really spectacular, etc.
