I'm not even a sports fan, but I've heard of Beckham. Sports figures are "celebrities", and our American society treats celebrities as role models (whether they are good or bad). So, yes, any American who has read a newspaper or turned on a television within the past few years has heard of David Beckham. It also helped that there was a movie called "Bend It Like Beckham". People who didn't know who he was became curious about him.

yes. i am not a soccer fan at all, i think it's boring and gay. but yes, i know who david beckham is. i know he is married to one of the spice girls, and there was a movie called 'bend it like beckham'. i didn't see the movie myself, but it was mildly sucessful in american theaters, so some people saw it. i would guess that most of us americans know who he is, even though very, very few of us are into soccer at the pro level. it's accually pretty popular as a sport small kids play, that's where the term 'soccer moms' comes from. the only 2 other soccer players i know the names of are the headbutt guy(zidane, i think), and the headbuttee(matterazzi, i think). and i only know who they are from browsing through the sports questions on yahoo answers. so i hope this helps you out, david beckham is probably the ONLY soccer player the average american is familiar with, besides pele from years past.

Yes the average american sports fan has heard of david beckham. It may mainly be because of Bend It Like Beckham and because of the fact that he's married to posh spice

i suspect the americans only know david beckham for his antics with rebecca loos more than his football skills .
after all posh and becks are publicity seekers who will do anything to get noticed i do admire his football talent though he should have never been dropped from the england squad by mclaren bring back beckham and coach him into becoming the england manager when he retires aventually .

Yes, I know that he's a drama queen who gave up the captain position after the World Cup. He's an amazing player, but American Football is TRUE football.....

I believe so, especially since that "Bend it Like Beckham" film came out. He started getting a lot of attention after that.

We hear about him now and then, but soccer doesn't get much press here. I don't even know what he looks like.
