I wonder whether this secret obsession is more prevalent that most people think, or whether it always lead to men finally coming out of the closet and announcing that they are indeed gay.

First of all, almost all cross-dressers are heterosexual. The majority of male homosexuals desire a masculine form not a parody of the female form.
Most couples who incorporate cross-dressing into their lives do so because the male has a desire to feel pretty and act feminine for a period of time and this is the only way it can be realistically experienced. As for the female partner she has the opportunity to enjoy the attentions of a man she loves as he acts in a softer and more delicate manner than most slam-bam thank you mam men. Most men are submissive when cross-dressed and will perform household duties gladly while dressed which is an added bonus as is the pampering and massages the real women experience during this period.
Then he can change clothes and go out to cut the Grass, the best of both worlds.

To answer your question, neither of those is correct. I wouldn't say that it is exactly considered "normal". Most crossdressers are straight men. It is considered a type of fetish, and can be all mixed up with sex in their minds, depending on how/when they first started to do it. It is indeed more prevalent than people think. You would be surprised if you knew which neighbor or churchgoing friend does it in private. I was married for eight years to a crossdresser. There is a whole community around the pastime, many members of which are "in the closet," the husbands AND the wives. It isn't something you can bring up to your in-laws at dinner! ;~D There is a group on Yahoo for spouses and partners of crossdressers. It used to be called tgso-1, (one), I think. Hope this helps.

Wow...!!! How incorrect...!!! Maybe the cross dressers you see or hear of may be gay, but let me say this... It's a KNOWN FACT that 99.9% of the cross dressers are heterosexual.... Furthermore.. I am a long time MARRIED cross dresser with a very supportive, understanding, accepting, knowledgeable, and helpful wife who has taught me all the traits to emulate women from presentation, to walking, standing, sitting, mannerisms make up, hair, nails, etc and I have an extensive wardrobe, including 42 pair of HIGH HEELS (and I do mean HIGH), and this for me, is a lifestyle, not a hobby or passing fancy / whim. The assumption that all c/d s t/v s t/g s and t/s s are gay - and there is nothing wrong with being gay - the fact is YOU ARE - or YOU AREN'T - simple as that.. but to assume is made up of only that, and NOT fact...!!! If you feel you appreciate cross dressers, keep in mind all of the aforementioned..... I for a fact, know many c/d s who are always looking for accepting female friends.. Rachelle In High Heels

Not necessarily a secret obsession.
Quite a lot of straight men crossdress.
Sometimes crossdressing is a symptom of more acute needs, and first step on the transgender road, but in the majority of cases this is not so.
In some people's view crossdressing is more a symptom of the socially limited range of expression allowed to men.

I think you will find that there are a lot of straight men out there that do it also. I think it is just a curiosity factor. I mean it is easier for us girls to dress as guys because all we have to do is put some pants on - there's our curiosity sorted. These poor guys have to go out in dresses to see what it is like and for some reason society sees this as abnormal. Personally some guys, straight or gay, look way better in dresses than any girl.

Crossdressers are almost always heterosexual men. Crossdressing is something that begins in puberty and has a sexual connection to the wearing of women's clothes, and most times just certain clothing becomes a fetish.

"Secret" depends entirely on the lifestyle you lead. In my lifestyle crossdressers are out and an accepted part of our community. However many crossdressers are men who are conservative, christian, upper class and married to women who have no clue and are closeted or seek out professionals.

Its far more prevalent than you think and about eighty to ninety percent of cross dressers are straight. Being gay or transgendered is considered normal. Reading can be fun and educational.

Quite a majority of cross dressers are straight, without question. It is part of their sexual play. Gays do it too, I'm sure, but mostly for entertainment.
