No an increase in penalties for divorce wont stop people from getting married and divorced it would more than likely cause more people to stay in a relationship without ever getting married because they don't want to risk going through the hassle of a divorce. Also divorce and marriage have actually leveled off in the last 20 or so years. The reason you think that divorce is going up is because the people that give out this statistics only go by the people who got married and divorced in the same year say you got married in january of 2000 then divorced in april of 2000 you would be in the statistics not the people who got married in january of 1990 then divorced in december of 2000 they also base these "facts" on the people who are of marriagable age i believe its from age 15 (young i know) and up. Also the media states bad things more than good things. Another example is that violent crime has actually been declining for the last 30 years. They just show it more in the media than the good things that happen.

are you a mad fascist ,who maybe also thinks that religion has a place in government .
what has divorce got to do with the government
or church for that matter if you are not a religious person,
Mariage is a social institution usually to protect the offspring

and do you honestly think that people will behave better
Some of the worst promiscuity is amongst religious people ,why is that.
In Mexico ,a very religious country ,almost all married men have it on the side as well.

I think the government should stay out of our PERSONAL LIVES.
Period. In my fantasy world, I'd like there to be comprehensive regulations on MARRIAGE. #1-divorce isn't the government's business, #2-just think about the consequences of stricter penalties! If we want OUT for heaven's sake, that's our choice. & speaking of choice, how about penalities for making a bad one in the first place? (Like jumping into marriage.)

No, government cant really fix that problem. Society has got to put a greater emphasis on marrage as being a life long commitment that you dont walk away from when it gets tough.

No I don't. I don't think it's the government's business who I marry (or who anyone else marries). I think the CHURCH should make that decision and ONLY the church. After all, marriage is a RELIGIOUS matter and government has no place in religion (and vice versa).

Because we have taken God out of the equation. The government needs to just process the paperwork and stay the hell out of it.

How about getting rid of the marriage benefits and have people get married because they want to instead of doing it to get bennies.
