Yeah but that says it all, "where is Knopfler" because weren't they a 5 piece band? The others could walk past you in the street and you'd not recognise them.

Hmmmm great guitarist but his song writing skills weren't so hot. The band had that problem of appealing to people who "weren't really into music" in much the same way as Springsteen, Meatloaf, Chris Rea etc. It was hard to shake off the blandness, I reckon.

I really though Knopfler had cracked it when he recorded the album with Dylan but even than album, when you listen to it now it sounds like the dead lice are dropping off it.

Great guitarist though- but If anything the big single - you know what one- held him back because he could never better it. Who could?

They where big without a doubt. I think the reason they are no longer seen is a personal choice of Knopfler himself?

as i said before great songs like walk of life were massive, but for knopfler as an individual nothing is better than hearing Local hero ( going home ) being played before kickoff at newcastle , the atmosphere and that song just go hand in hand,

Out standing on his own , seems to be doing movie sound tracks, wait I think I can hear strains of Brothers in Arms fade into obscurity in this age of Censors.

They were an icon, a brilliant band, but as with all things fashion changes, but you still remember the good ones.

He is a great guitarist, & a good singer. I love Dire Straits, & will have to rely on my tapes, cds & yes, vinyl records!

Probably because he writes lame songs (except for Sultans of Swing, of course). Great guitarist, but not a great songwriter.
