How hard is it to replace both? Can a shock absorber replace a strut? Any advice? I am a "jack of all trades" and have done mechanical work yet have never replaced either item. Can I buy struts with the coil attached?

You need a special tool to compress the strut, which has a shock absorber inside it. Do not try and remove the strut without the tool, it can be very dangerous because it actually holds the body of the car up. If you get a strut compressor you should be able to change both by yourself. The timing belt is just a matter of removing everything in the way and use a harmonic balance puller to get the pulleys off the crankshaft. once the Harmonic balancer is off remove the timing chain cover, line up the timing marks and slip the new belt on. If you have a side mount engine you will be in for a lot of hard work in tight places. Good Luck!

Struts are simple to remove and install. However, the spring should be done at a shop. $30 labor. Unless you have a hydroulic press in your garage Then you'll need to have the car aligned again.

Timing belt?? Buy a book.

Honda factor!! hehe No, heavily, between the two i could pass with the Toyota, the couple of human beings I knew with Jeeps have been constantly having issues. Toyotas are oftentimes very reliable.
