If you have access to a willow tree, cut some pieces and soak them in water for about a day, then discard the willow, but save the water. Put the plant that you want to root into this water. There is supposed to be a growth stimulant in willow that mimics the commercial growth hormone. I haven't had success with this, but maybe you will. I can't think of any other source of hormone other than commercially.

You won't get the success with a home made concoction that you will with an actual growth hormone. It's hard enough to root starts with the real thing let alone trying to do it with watered down hormones that might or might not be there. A small packet of rooting hormone only costs a few bucks. So bite the bullet and go to a L&G Center and buy one.

I concur with the willow recommendation. I saw it on a show on TLC years ago called Gardening Naturally. Barbara Damrosch was one of the hosts and it was her suggestion to make a rooting compound with water and small willow sticks in a jar.
Presumably the longer you let the sticks soak, the stronger the solution becomes.
Hope this helps!
