Greyhound offers travel-pass deals.
Amtrak is fairly limited and expensive.
you could line up rides on Craigslist; or go youth hostel to youth hostel bumming rides with fellow travelers.
I think they still do driveaways, where you deliver other people's cars cross-country. You pay gas, and have a deadline to reach your destination city; and can only deviate so far from the point-to-point distance.
Or you could rent wheels, and advertise on Craigslist for passengers to help defray the costs.

My best choice is driving.
compact 4 cylinder will be the best for saving gas.
Gas is more expensive at the remote area. go to where about four or more stations competing each other.
have a ice chest and sleeping back, extra gas and a gallon of water in trunk. jack, cable, and a spare tier too.
peanut butter and jelly, fruits, chocolate bars. the less you it at the restaurant, even McDonald, the more you save.
keep some crunch chips to keep you awake when necessary.
you can sleep in rest area, and go to truck stop for shower and a descent meal.
you can look into classify section to see if someone looking for driving accompany too.
or find someone yourself.
Please don't hitchhike!!!!

Find a Hostel. They schedule bus trips. Or, just drive your car from city to city and attraction to attraction and sleep in it to save money. Invite a friend to split gas money. Starting in CA, this is the route I would take: San Fran, Yosemite, LA(San Gabriel Mountains), Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, The Alamo or other Texas attraction, New Orleans, Disney World(if you got the money), Washington DC, New York, Boston, Mount Rushmore, Colorado Mountains, Seattle and back down to CA.

The train is cheap in other countries but expensive here. Greyhound often has special rates going on. I'd do that for fairly short hops.. I like the itinerary Laissez up top suggested.
Note: somebody mentioned Indiana. Don't go there. It's flat and boring!

It relies upon lots on what time of 12 months you would be going. regardless of if it is heat sufficient to climb in Yosemite, it is going to likely be thank you to warm to climb in Moab and Joshua Tree. many of the conventional mountain climbing aspects have low fee or loose tenting close by. Plan on $10-$20US consistent with evening or much less. it may be extra fee-effective which you could purchase a automobile and then attempt to sell it somewhat than renting for numerous weeks. iciness: Joshua Tree, Chochise Stronghold, crimson Rocks (vegas) Hueco Tanks. summer season: Yosemite Valley or Tuolomne if its warm, Lake Tahoe section, Smith Rock Spring/Fall: Eldorado Canyon in Colorado, Moab Utah, crimson Rocks, Las Vegas is it is cool, or Mount Lemon.

Back packing is a great way to see the US. If this is to slow ride a bicycle. you can stop at WMCA for the night or take a tent.
It's really fun!
