I have three laptops I'm choosing from - they all have basically the same specs. The Acer is $950, the HP is $1100 and the Sony is $1150.

It's always been my experience that Acer is to laptops what McDonald's is to fine dining, but I'm putting it here just because it's there. So, of these three, which comes most highly recommended and why?

For the record, these are the three laptops:

Also, I've heard some of these brands have problems with Java. How true is this? I'm a programmer, so that's kind of important.

The Answer: laptops, not desktops. I built my desktop, I agree with ya on that.

JSalakar: yeah, I love Toshibas, but my warranty from my latest dead laptop (a Toshiba refurb, though it worked perfectly until it died) only goes to TigerDirect.com, and none of their Toshibas have what I want (Duo Core processor and 15.4+ inch screen). Thanks though.

When it comes down to it, your paying for the name brand, but you also get what you pay for. If you don't mind paying a little more the Sony is worth it, but you will be just as happy with the Acer. Good luck.

what the f*** dose the brand have anything to do with the actual PC. All that maters is the parts that is uses. In my opinion everyone should buycot prebuilt PC's and build their own. Companys always stick you with the slowest parts possible and give no possible way to upgrade.

I saw this one HP PC that even though it had a respectable CPU everything else was crapy. It had DDR2/400 RAM (What is the point of having DDR2 if it's gonna be stuck at a slow speed of 200MHz? DDR2 RAM can go up to 500MHz [ DDR2/1000 ] )

But about the laptops I would chose the HP one because it has a faster proc and has up to 256 MB shared memory. (Too bad it's crappy intel graphics.)

I have an Acer laptop for almost a year now, can't complain never had any problems. I know their the McDonald's of fine dining but food is food once your stomach's full the stomach doesn't complain.
In my opinoin Sony's always overrated & over priced ,if you want fine dining go with the HP

Personally, I like the Toshiba notebooks much better. I bought one about 80 or 10 years ago and never had a problem with it, and it was still working great when I sold it to someone else about 2 years ago. Then I bought matching notebooks for my wife and I somewhere over 2 years ago and they are still working good. Two of my sisters inlaws also bought Toshiba notebooks and they are very happy with their computers too.

Acer is a new brand name. Though it is not well known as Sony but its quality is as high as the others. One more thing the price is a little bit lower. we can save money. !!!!!!!!!!1
