My son's 1978 Camaro has mags on it. The car shakes at higher speeds (50+). Already had the tires balanced. Helped but still shakes. Is there any sort of fitting/gasket available to take up the space between the oval holes in the mags and the round bolt for the lug nuts

it sounds to me like you need shouldered lugnuts and oval shaped washers - old school cragar or keystone style - im suprised the people who balanced the wheels and tires couldnt help you with this. go to a reputable tire store and have them look at them. you should be able to buy the nuts and washers at any discount auto parts store

these type of wheels are called unilug. There is specific lug bolt kits you purchase for the particular car, it has the lug bolts along with washers that go behind the lug bolts. Also when installing the wheel...it is easy to overtighten the lug bolts and make the tires run unbalanced. I always took something like a large hammer and place it next to the tire...rotate the tire as you tighten the lug bolts...if the tire rubs in one place and doesn't on another...tighten the bolts accordingly.

Hope this helps

ET ,Crager and others made some Unilug wheels, they had oval holes. They also had special washers and lug nuts. I would
think if your wheels are tight they should not shaking. Perhaps
a broken belt in a tire? Have you rotated your tires to see if the
problem moves. Good luck with it.

If the holes are elongated due to wear, there is nothing you can do that would fix the problem safely and cheaper than a new set of rims.

You could try welding the holes over and re drilling them, but you would need good welding equipment (TIG/GTAW), a method of re-heat treating the rim, and a precision drilling machine.

You could also drill the holes oversize and insert aluminum bushings, but again you would need precision machining equipment.

If they are the type of rims that have a slotted holes, you should be using special lug nuts that fit snugly inside the hole. Not the tapered kind.
