As an Irishman, I believe Lincoln to be the greatest president in the history of the U.S. Simply because he abolished slavery.

Abraham Lincoln was no less a warmonger than any other US president. Think about it. From the very beginning the US had a seriously successful three star general, George Washington, as president of the newly created United States of America. Every single president of the US has had to deal with war of some sort during his term of office. It is inevitable really.
From a purely cynical point of view, the real reason why Abraham Lincoln wanted to abolish slavery was due to the fact that slavery gets in the way of Capitalism. Capitalism needs a flexible workforce, one which can be hired and fired at will. With slaves, you have to supply their accommodation and pay their medical bills. You do not have to do any such thing with hired workers. They fend for themselves, join unions and clubs, and work hard for small rewards.
In England, from the 1830s onwards, children were taught in school to recite particular statements about the work ethic and how only their last hour of work per day would bring a profit to their employer. Men, women and children were openly exploited in UK by the capitalists. Little wonder then that Karl Marx and Engels found fertile ground, so much so that the world's very first Communist Party was actually established in London UK.
Only Charles Dickens stood against the capitalists showing them up in his many books for what they really were.

Abraham Lincoln is considered by many academic historians and political scientists to be one of the top presidents of the United States. Many neophyte historians attribute Lincoln's importance to the Emancipation Proclamation. One must note; however, that Lincoln did not sign the Emancipation Proclamation until the War Between the States had been going on for several years. Lincoln recognized that emancipating the slaves could/would provide the North with additional troops and a military advantage, plus a social demoralization of the South.
George Washington is also considered one of America's great leaders and one of the top five presidents; but, Washington was an elitist in a time of elitist leaders. Today, we might view him as an "opportunist".
Under the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt, many social programs were put into operation, and many made law (Social Security), that were embraced by an America in despair. Some of the grandchildren and great grandchildren of these same Americans are now attempting to abolish Social Security.
"Beauty" is in the "eye of the beholder"; and so are many presidents and leaders. We admire and respect those who give us what we want, not necessarily what we need.

Remember, Lincoln was pretty much hated during the Civil War, and was surprised to win re-election. He over saw the most lethal war that the US has ever undertaken.
Washington, too, oversaw a lot of bloodshed, too.
And we should be thankful for their resolve and courage.
