How about the need for history teachers to take a short course in horses and horsemanship? I say this because a heck of a lot of history took place on the back of a horse and to the rhythm of hoofbeats, and most people who teach history have rarely, if ever, been on the back of a horse. They teach about events that involved horses (e.g., many of the battles of the Civil War, Custer's last stand at the Little Bighorn, the migration of pioneers across the great plains, the Pony Express, etc.) but they have no idea of what this actually involved. When I was in college, one of my history professors made a bald statement that people on horseback could travel 30 MPH. I asked him where he got that number. He said that was the average speed of a galloping horse. This ninnyhammer thought that because racehorses can travel this fast on a specially prepared racetrack, any horse could go this fast. Over uphill trails. At night. With a 180-pound rider and 40 pounds of gear. On a trail they've never been over. Right. Teachers need to understand horses and horseback riding. How can they teach accurately about events they don't know anything about?

Teacher certification verses Credentials.
Teacher advocating their personal opinion verses teachers who teach.
Politicians stretching the truth verses telling the truth...Who gets elected?
Stocking a lake with fish verses fishing.
You can't drown in a puddle if you just stand up verses: The whole world is going to hell in a hand basket. This is my favorite, the world of positive or the world of negative.

i once gave a speech on the benefits of giving blood. i had to persuade folks to want to give. you could write the essay on the benefits of giving vs. not giving.
