It is likely the hard drive, but since you are renting from rent-a-center, you have an awesome service warranty. Simply have them send it to tech support and get a loaner from them. Don't open the case yourself as you might violate the warranty and I know rent-a-center doesn't like that sort of thing.
Question: Is the humming in tune? You could simply ignore it and hum along. (Just a bit of humor for you!)

Despite all the integrated circuits, micro-controllers, and other similar hardware on our computer that only transmit electrons, certain devices like cdrom drives, hard drives, fans, they all contain motors which make them spin. Sometimes these devices become out of balance when the spin, thus creating vibrations, which you sometimes hear as humming. To fix this problem you first need to make sure your devices are securely fastened to the computer case, if they still make a loud humming sound you should go out and replace that component.

Hi there,
It will more than likely be your case fan or CPU fan vibrating against the case somehow. Try this.
Go inside your computer. Make sure you are statically discharged first. Find the CPU fan (It will be attached to the CPU, on the motherboard), follow the thin cables to it, and unplug it from your motherboard - making sure you remember where to plug it back in. Put the case back on, and see if it does the same thing.
Do the same thing with your other fans in the computer untill you find the problem. If it is one of the fans, get it replaced with a quieter one.

sounds like you may have a cable swaying into the blades of the fan ever so often. If not check ur powersuppy yo make sure it is clean. There may be a piece of paper or something in there. From experience its been one of those.

Use a HD utility to check if your HD is bad. Goto manufacturers website and create a bootdisk with the utility. If that checks out then it is most likely your heatsink fan. Most of the time the HD makes a high pitch noise where a cpu/heatsink fan makes a much lower sounding noise.

Does this happen when your computer sits for a while, and then you try to open up a file? Mine does that. It makes like a humming and racing sound. It's like it's in a dormatory state and then warming up or something.

Be extremly careful with this problem. 9 times out of 10 its your hard drive is spinning up and that sound signifies that its about to die. backup all of your data immediatly. Do not put it off, you will regret it later, when you go to your computer one day and see that you have a message blinking at you stating...
"No Operating System Found"

It is the hard drive starting to fail. It could go on for years doing this or one day you can be on it and it just die. I would replace the hard drive while you have the chance to save your information.
