How did you pay for the money order? Go to where you got the money order and get a copy of the receipt. You will have to pay again for that month, but you can put a stop payment on the money order and hopefully get your money back...which you can use to pay the back rent.

You should have the "stub" from the money order to prove it. It would be dated. You could also dig up your bank statements to show them the date you withdrew $825, and perhaps that woudl persuade them that you paid it. If you bought a money order somewhere that keeps records and know the date (and hopefully time, like AM or PM) they can look it up in their records and give you the MO #. Then you can call the company that issues the Money Orders and ask them for the information about whether or not that one had been cashed.

Its VERY suspect that they waited 2 months. In court I'm betting that wouldn't hold up-- but lets hope it doesn't come to that.

And from now on-- hang onto those stubs you get that detach from the Money order. That way if they claim they didnt get it you can see if its been cashed or cancel it and get a new one issued.

I think if you lost the receipt you are out of luck. But maybe you should ask them for a statement for the last 9 months or so. Maybe you really just got behind & don't know it.
