They used the rhythm method or withdrawal method. Both of which work over 94% of the time with "perfect use" and over 80% with average use. Which is VERY comparable to barrier methods. I think it's kind of funny how those methods get looked down on so much and I wonder if it isn't because they are free! Although they do not protect against STD's but neither does the pill. Also both the rhythm method and withdrawal method work very well for some people and not well for others. Women who's cycles aren't regular are very likely to get pregnant with the rhythm method and those who are regular are not very likely, if they use it. Men who know when they are going to ejeculate are going to be able to use withdrawal much more effectivly then men who aren't sure.

For one thing, women used to nurse their children for a lot longer than we're accustomed to now that most of us have to face going back to work. Nursing isn't by any means foolproof as a method of birth control but it IS nature's way to attempting to space pregnancies.

As someone said, condoms have actually been used for centuries. And many cultures have used different types of botanical products as birth control as well, though the failure rates would be unacceptable compared with the choices we have today.

Women have also observed their cycles and practiced varying forms of what would now be called the rhythm method.

Abortion has also been practiced for centuries, or perhaps even millenia. It wasn't even frowned upon by the Church until modern times (relatively speaking, anyway.)

And some couples simply stopped having sex when more children weren't an option.

I didn't read the quesiton correctly. Women did what is called natural birth control. It is not 100% effective probably not even 75% effective but it works most of the time. They don't have sex during the normal time they ovulate. They plan and decide when they are going to have sex. Back then they probably knew that if you have sex about two weeks before you have your period then that's when you will get pregnant. And back then they didn't have sex unless it was for baby making.

Timing of intercourse in their cycles.
Herbs could be used to prevent pregnancy or to abort the child.

Sheepskin condoms are really quite old.....invented around the year 1564!

they used the "pull- out method"! One must also consider the fact that back then people had different views of sex and marriage. I doubt there was as much "free sex" going on then as there is now.

nothing I guess that's probably why they had so many kids back then. They could have figured out when they were ovulating and avoided sex during that time.
