wow, algebra can be used in real life, I figured this out once, but it didnt come out exactly but close enough so that when i figured it out i could easily find the answer, anyway here goes:
I sometimes get invoices that need to be broken down in our system, the invoice maybe for 71.50 but i need to show in our system 65.00 plus 10 percent. What is the formula to this problem to take the guess work out...thanks all
for clarification we assume that the unkown is the 65.00 and the 6.50, in other words how can we take a number like 71.50 and figure out what number plus 10 percent of that number equals 71.50

X = 1.1 N

where X is the figure you have (71.5)

N is the number you are looking for.

Well, if we did do it algebraically, then we can say that the number is x. Then, x plus 10% of x, or 1.1x, should equal 71.50. Therefore, x, or the number you started out with, is 71.5 divided by 1.1, or 65.

So in otherwords, the formula you're looking for is always the final amount divided by 1.1.

Sale at clothing store - 20% off marked price. Automobile can brake from 50 mph to 0 in 100 feet. How many feet would it take to brake from 70 mph to 0. (Hint: It's not 70/50 x 100 feet)

When you assumed 65, that wasn't using algebra.

The equation you were trying to get is the following:

A x (1+0.1) = 71.50, which becomes
1.1A = 71.50
A=65

Total=Amount + Amount x .10 = amount x 1.10
Amount=Total/1.10
There is your formula.

But it may not really be the answer you are looking for. I ran into this when i needed to have a total for a credit card transaction that included the card charge on the total which is in turn a percentage of the total. That one is a little more complex when you have the sales tax on the total too.

You have y=x+x/10 (that is, x plus ten percent of x, since 10%=1/10). Solve for y:

y=11x/10
x=10y/11

Ok you have:

X = Original Price
.1X = Markup (10%)

so X + .1X = 71.50

1.1X = 71.5

X = 71.50/1.1

X = 65.00
