Does anyone know any good neighborhoods easily assesable by the DART train line? I'm looking to move out to Dallas and I heard it can be very dangerous. I don't have a car so I am going to have to take the train. Also, are there any interesting/unique/fun/hip/safe neighborhoods along the DART line? Thanks.

You have a number of choices for good neighborhoods close to DART lines. The Cedars, south of downtown, is an up-and-coming area with some hip bars and entertainment venues. Southside on Lamar is located in that area, and there are new, relatively inexpensive townhomes being built there. Downtown is an option, though as previous responses mention, it can be pricey. Cityplace Station is within walking distance of West Village and Knox Park, but again, rents are higher there than elsewhere. Mockingbird Station was mentioned previously as well--it was designed around the DART line with shops, restaurants, loft apartments and a theater. Farther north, Richardson and Plano are redeveloping the areas around their stations to entice people to live near the rail line.

Also, keep in mind that DART is still building out its system. Deep Ellum and the Fair Park/Expo Park area won't have light rail until 2009. A monthly DART pass, though, will let you transfer to buses as needed. If you're not opposed to bus transfers, you could also consider Lower Greenville, East Dallas, Oak Lawn, and even the Bishop Arts District in Oak Cliff.

The links below might have helpful information for you. Best of luck with your move, and have fun exploring what Dallas has to offer!

There are any number of upscale apartments and shopping within walking distance from the Mockingbird Station off the Red Line (the line that follows US-75 north).

The DFW Area really doesn't have good neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods anymore. Its more block by block now. The Mockingbird Station Area is nice but its pricey. There are a few high rises downtown that are nice, but again pricey.

There are plenty of good neighborhoods along the train line in the Arlington-Fort Worth area.
