verification of what? I've used them lots of times and never had a need for a phone call. You can call yourself if you need to.

They're not going to call you. You will however get lots of e-mail from "paypal" asking you to verify your account information. These are scams. You can tell because they ask for your ATM or check card number and then ask for the PIN number. If you give up that information you will be wiped out within a few minutes. PayPal will request extra information only through your EBay or Pay Pay account. Don't get scammed !!
