It was an A for adultry but it was also to single out the wearer as a person who had comitted a sin. To embarass them into walking the straight and narrow and repenting their sin. It was also so others could contribute to the punishment by ignoring the person or denying them access to stores and services. At that time to be seen talking to such a person would almost make you an accessory to the sin. So buying food or having a serviceman come to your home for repairs would have been hard. That poor woman to have to go through all that because she fell in love. I'm sure glad it's 2006.
