Also, what is the difference in their attitudes? My dd wants to get one when she grows up and is doing her research now. Thanks!

A hand is a measurement in height for horses. It can range from 4-6 inches.

Shires are larger, but the different just in general between them are that Shires come in more varieties of colors than clydesdales and clydesdales have a slight roman nose while the shire has a staight normal nose.

Most draft horses have the same attitude, you know each horse has their own personality, but in general most larger horses are referred to as 'gentle giants'.

They are two different breeds of draft horses. Both breeds are bred to pull, they can be ridden, but due to their wide build, are generally not very comfortable to ride. Shires tend to be bigger all around, they're the largest draft breed. Both breeds are kind and gentle giants. I used to have a clydesdale/TB cross who was the best horse all around that I've ever owned.

A hand is an old English form of measurement. It's equivalent to 4 inches. For example, a horse that is 16hands is 64 inches tall at the withers. A horse that is 16.2 hands tall is 66 inches tall at the withers. Each point measurement after the full hand is equivalent to an inch. There is not such thing as .4 hands or up. You can have a horse that is 16hh, 16.1hh, 16.3hh, or 17hh. No 16.4, or the ever common 16.5 (that's when you know a person does not know what they're talking about.)

A hand is the way to measure horse. Roughly, it's around four inches. A hand begins at the bottom of the hoof and stops at the withers (shoulder)

A Clydesdale is slightly smaller than a Shire and more often found for riding. If your dd (assuming that is daughter?) is interested in large horses, then I would recommend a Belgian Draft Horse because they are quite common and used for riding quite a bit.

As for temperment, it depends on the horse. With a lot of handling and care, any horse can have a nice temperment.

The Clydesdale one of the breeds commonly referred to as "heavy horse" or "draft horse" developed in Scotland. It closely resembles the Shire horse, although it is not as heavy. Its type was evolved by the farmers of Lanarkshire, through which the River Clyde flows. The old name for Lanarkshire was Clydesdale.

It was bred to meet not only the agricultural needs of these farmers, but the demands of commerce for the coalfields of Lanarkshire and for all types of heavy haulage on the streets of Glasgow. The breed thus developed and soon acquired more than a local reputation. In time, the breed spread throughout the whole of Scotland and northern England.
and the hand is a unit of measure for horses in general, and it is equal to about 4 inches as mentioned above.

they are both draft horses. draft horses are large breeds. slightly different conformations and color markings. very very good temperments. i used to have a belgian, wonderful horse. i also used to have percheron/ paint cross.

a hand is how tall a horse is. each hand is 4 inches. and a horse's height is measured at the withers (the bottom of their neck). for example my horse is 17.1 hands which means his back is roughly 5'7'' off the ground
