This answer will always depend on who you ask.

Dick Butkus

Jack Tatum was overrated, and was never that good. He paralyzed Darryl Stingley (on a clean hit), and this added to his reputation... but he was never the hardest hitter in football.

Jack Lambert was a guy you didn't want to run into.

Lawrence Taylor would certainly be in the running.

Ronnie Lott was an extremely hard hitter.

And of course, there's Ray Lewis today.

I think that each era has it's own group of hard hitters... it's really impossible to say if Ray Lewis hits harder than Dick Butkus... I don't know how anyone could know, unless they played against both defenders, and nobody did.

Besides, Jim Brown dealt far more punishment running the ball than any of these guys ever did by tackling somebody!

Without a Doubt Dick "Night Train Lane" This guy was total beast on the field. This guy hit people so hard by their heads and necks, that they amde that type of tackle illegal.

Not only did he hit the hardest he holds the record for most int's by a rookie, was named as the best cornerback of the NFL's first 50 years, he finsihed his career with 68 interceptions, 1,207 interception return yards, 5 touchdowns, 11 fumble recoveries, 57 fumble return yards, 1 touchdown, 8 receptions, 253 receiving yards, 1 touchdown catch, and 4 punt returns for 14 yards.

No question, the hardest hitter

My personal one is a tie between Ronnie Lott and Steve Atwater. Just as Lott retired - Atwater took his place. Both were all round good guys off the field - but once they stepped on the field - you better watch out. No player in today's NFL has such influence - except for Ray Lewis (remember, he beat a double homicide rap in Atlanta).

Past: Lawrence Taylor
Present: Rodney Harrison (is the unofficial record holder for most fines, holds the dubious title of dirtiest player given by sports illustrated magazine.)
Future: Shawne Merriman (madman on the field, In his second start of his rookie season last year, he put a hit on Priest Holmes that Holmes still hasn't returned from, it may have ended his career, and the hit was legal!)

I think people maybe confused about tough. If by tough you mean the guys i would not want to be hit by, it is 1. Lawrence Taylor 2. Dick Butkus 3. Jack Lampert If you mean the guy who is fearless, who just keeps coming back no matter how hard he is hit, that belongs to Brett Favre. Most consecutives starts in NFL history, played with broken bones, deaths in the family, etc. A prime example was his constant arguments with star d-lineman warren sapp. i remember one particular play, after sapp crushed him, favre stood up and screamed out "is that all you got?" at sapp. He is one tough SOB.

Ronnie Lott. The hits on the receivers are always the hardest caught on video. Check out these clips:
