Michigan State is a puzzlement. They're either sizzle or fizzle, with nothing inbetween. No coach since Duffy Daugherty has been able to get four consistent quarters of top level play from the team---maybe Nick Sabin did on occasion....The team always fields great talent, but motivation, endurance, and character seem to be lacking....a source of heartbreak to their fans, every season. On a good day, they can give any team in the country a battle. On a bad one, as in the ND game, they can "come from ahead" and lose ingloriously. This past week, the sterling MSU quarterback Drew Stanton got pounded and pounded---extremely painful to watch. I don't blame John L. Smith as many coaches before him have had the same experience in East Lansing. But somewhere out there must be a guy like ol' Duff....

probably since Michigan State has lost their last four games and they let Notre Dame come back and beat them and they let Illinois beat them too

Probably, unless they go on a helluva winning streak to end the season. They have the talent to win out, but they don't have the heart to do it.
