People say that the winners write history. As far as I know I live in a democracy (UK) giving me the right to post this question. However I have been to Germany and always had this feeling in the back of my head, yes the Holocasut was true because so many people say that they new family and friends who died in the Holocaust and WW2, however other people say that the Holocasut never existed and say stuff like it was staged for the advantage of zionists. What can I believe is true and what is rubbish when I know that the saying is true that history is written by the winners?

The winners may write the history, but that does not mean that it is skewed that far from the truth.

The winners can hire the truth but can't burry it.Little things can be hiden(such as the total abbsence of arms for mass distruction by the iraqens) but not such a big thing as the holocaust.Because the people living in that epoch live and can tell the truth.About holocaust there are the existing files ,buildings, videos, etc that support the deal.Expecialy in the democracies where there is the voice of the opposition the truth can't be hiden.About the voices that it has never happend(Ahmadinejad has recently said that)this has the only a political mean. And the saying you mention is abbsolutely true when it comes to totalitar regimes but within a country something like that is imposibble to achive worldwide.

um first of all, if you think that people can just "pretend" a crapload of people died and get everyone believing it, you are very much mistaken. history is a written narrative based on evidence. even if history is written by the winners, there are a lot of things about history that can not be changed. if the US wanted to make themselves seem perfect, what happened to rewriting the vietnam war? it was considered a major major major failure. the people themselves (of the US) were so opposed to the war. but anyways, i think the people that say the holocaust never existed should take a tour of the remnants of the camps and ask themselves if the allies could really just "make this up" and create fake camps just to stage something for the zionists. also, remember that propaganda was huge during WWII. people were saying stuff like germans eat belgian children (i always found this one ridiculously outrageous because who would believe that?) america had its rosie the riveter with the help with the war efforts. when you are reading history, always bear in mind who the author is and from what side they see from. the only thing you can do is to read historical accounts from both sides, and then judge for yourself

This shows the importance of historians. Yes, most history is written by the winners...but there is and must be something wirtten by the loosers. Learn both sides and then determine the truth for yourself. It's like a fight by two little kids. They have thier own points of veiw as well as their own bias. Most historians have researched these things, but they also have their own bias'. There is no such thing as an historian without their own opinion.
Basically, what I'm saying is that most history is written by the "dead white guys" and the "winners" but, a good historian, will have looked at the other side and included the opponents arguement in the text. If not, you must do your own research and find it out for yourself.

The Winners write history DOESN'T mean they make it up. It means they can decide how much worse they can make things. Look at the U.S. and the way that for years it was said viewed like the Native Americans were savage and brutal and evil basically. That is because the Winners write history. When the U.S. Govt defeated the Native Americans it allowed them to look as bad as the Govt wanted to make them look. That doesn't work as well now. Although it is still done.

The U.S. didn't WIN 'Nam so they couldn't rewrite it as a victory. Had they won you might hear that no one was against it. You might believe the war was justified by our ships being attacked, which we later learned wasn't true. There are other things that get creatively edited out.

Yes,I agree..winners write history or they have the major influence on it!Always look for independant source and compare them between, listen to the both versions-claims,look for more facts, arguments and you will be able to recognize the truth, always come up with ur own opinion which should be released of any propaganda and logicaly supported!

I have two words for you PRIMARY SOURCES

When you know what they are and how to use them you will have earned the right to question what you read in your text book. Until then... well... relax, and don't listen to the American Nazi Party. Don't you find it odd that the NATIONAL socialist party of America worships a German as a god? I mean, at least find an American facist to worship.

You can't rely on the books you read in school. Have to read more than that.
