As one enters the living room, one is overpowered by cigarrette odour which seems to be clinging to the carpet as there are some holes and black marks in it made seemingly by cigarette ash. It has two windows that are kept open 24 hours a day. I have used powder on the carpet before vaccum, but it has not helped, I have used room deodarant but that does not help either. The landlord is not willing to change the carpet and I am dreading how to enter the room in the winter when the windows will have to be kept closed.

You first need to establish what is causing the odor. It could be several things. Check the apartment with a fine tooth comb and see if you can find the reason for the odor. In a house that I rented a few years back the bathroom smelled so strongly of urin I couldn't stand it. I called a plumber and he found that there was a leak at the bottom of the toilet. Not enough to make the carpet wet, but enough to make a terrible stink. I told the owner that I wanted the carpet taken out and vinyl put in. He did so and repaired the leak. Good as new. I kept the window open in the bathroom tho it was getting pretty cold out then. Good luck to you.

Carpet Fresher

or any combination of your favorite essentail oils
Measure 4 cups of baking soda into a bowl, add essential oils. Break up any clumps that form, stir until well mixed. Before vacuuming sprinkle powder from a shaker type can or jar. Let it sit on the carpet for about 15 minutes then vacuum.

Rent a carpet cleaner (or pay someone to do it). Usually you can get a cleaning solution that is made for removing odors (usually pet odors) but if not, clean it once with whatever carpet cleaning solution you can get and then again with a mixture of either baking soda and hot water or white vinegar and hot water. Either one of these is an odor remover. The vinegar smell will go away as the carpet dries so don't freak. Once it dries give it a good spritz with Febreze.

Hi
I would recommended cleaning your carpets and using a disinfectant like Milgo SR (may need to go to a janitorial supply store for this and ask for a disinfectant for carpet) and put it in the rinse water. Deodorizers just cover up the smell for a while and disinfectant kill bacteria in the carpet. I would also wash the walls with this product.

Please DO NOT put anything on the carpet that was not made for carpet

All these are good ideas and worth trying but to get all those powders and liquids out again you need a washing vacuum cleaner, buy or hire. Take your time on the vacuum drying stage. Its a slow process but done thoroughly makes a friendly carpet.

Febreeze or vinegar might help. Has the carpet been shampooed? Tobacco in general is a rather tenacious smell. And cigarettes are among the worst.

Good luck!

Try baking soda - you may have to do this several times. You need to let it set for a while to give it time to absorb the odors. Vacuum thoroughly. You might want to try one of those ozone air cleaners too.

I have a friend that swears Febreeze works so well. Try that. I think the problem lies within the padding. It is probably deep in the fabric. Try Febreeze. It is rather inexpensive way to try something.
