A couple of options I can suggest - hard to diagnose from what you describe :-( but ...

Power everything off then back on again starting with the router

Have you set up security? It may be that you can see the wireless signal but not connect (e.g. MAC address filtering or a WPA password is stopping you)

It means you are losing too many packets, or info exchange, between your PC and the wireless router.
This can be caused by a number of things. You may be too far from the router to get a continous connection. Some routers and USB adapters for wireless, such as D-Link products, are fairly tempermental, and do not like walls, trees, a stiff wind and all the normal things that can interupt it.

Another reason could be you do not have the connection secured and someone else is using it, slowing you down.

Most wireless routers like to be set up in a " line of sight " connection, nothing interfering with it.
Check you connection strenght by right clicking the icon in the task panel and select status, see how much it is. It may be low and that is the cause of it.

Sounds like a weak signal - that can be affected by atmostpheric conditions. My signal strength earlier was good now it's low. but I still have a good enough signal. reposition your router. maybe move it upstairs if it's downstairs with a long RJ11 cable.
