Because in this day and age of political correctness, men are not allowed to be men and women are not allowed to be women! These days "positive" discrimination is in effect, meaning the woman should sweep the man off his feet! It just doesn't work, does it?! Bring back the days of the "Damsel in distress"!

I have to agree. The last romantic film I saw was the Keira Knightly version of "Pride & Prejudice," which has ruined me forever, by the way. I can only fall for a man who I have "bewitched, body & soul." Although, "The Notebook" was rather nice. I think it has to do with the fact that the majority of filmmakers are men & they are making films geared towards them. On the occassion that "romance films" are made, they are all based on the tired worn out cliches & the characters are rarely developed enough for anyone to care if they actually get together or not. Another question one might ask, why aren't romantic comedies funny anymore?

They never have. Victorian fiction is a greatly underestimated genre- films can be made quickly from basic unthought out ideas, scripts written by relatively untalented people - things like Jane Eyre, pride and predjudice etc come from books which were years in the writing - eloquently written, and intricately thought out - and it comes across in the telling of the story.

Because real life gets in the way!!!! They've tried to make movies realistic -which is not compatible with old-fashioned romance and chivalry!
Shame. Still, at least we have Johnny Depp in his Pirate outfit to think about if we start feeling a bit sad about reality..........
I feel much better now! x

It's all about the stars. They are so egotisticlal. The older films are always about a happy ending eventually, but you had to sit and watch them to be able to get the story.Nowadays the film comes on,you watch it for five minutes and you know exactly what's going to happen.BORING.

Because the men in them are modern men. They're not the handsome romantic era kind.
