rainy day means storm or disaster. We are usually told to have supplies during a natural disaster such as food, medicine,batteries etc. In real life context in means preserving what we have so that when something s goes wrong,we will have enough resources to cope. such as saving money, food, the environment

It means to prepare your character, so that you can salvage yourself at bad times.
Basically, you should grow and learn in every possible way so that you won't be left short-handed when you're in a bad situation.
