Lightscribe technology is basically the ability of a DVD burner to burn images or words on the flip side of the DVD--a labeler, if you will. I'd find it unnecessary, unless you want to make professional looking labels on your discs.

A Lightscribe DVD burner has a secondary laser that prints a DVD label onto a specially designed Lightscribe disc. The disc is made with a reactive layer that changes color when the Lightscribe laser beams over it. To print a DVD label, Lightscribe software is usually included with your drive. Simply install it on your computer, start up the program and add text, an image or anything you wish to have printed onto your DVD. Lightscribe only prints in black and white, unfortunately. And yes, there are external DVD burners with Lightscribe available. You can buy internal drives for your desktop and laptop as well. I have a slimline Memorex DVD burner that I bought for $70. It's essentially a laptop drive installed into an enclosure that connects the drive to USB. The DVD burner in my laptop doesn't work correctly so I took my external drive apart and installed the Lightscribe burner into my laptop. It works well and it's easier for me because I always have it wherever I go. If you are looking to make CDs and DVDs with color labels, you will need a special color label printer for CDs and DVDs. These printers are very expensive, but will print off a label in full color. All you need is a recordable CD or DVD with a blank white layer that the printer can print your label onto. These are cheaper than Lightscribe discs, but like I said, the printer is very expensive.

A DVD burner is actually just a CD burner with a different name so people will buy them! Companies encrypt movies so you can not copy them!
