Reading finished second in the 1994-1995 English First Division but was denied a promotion because of the reduction of teams in the Premiership from 1995-1996 season from 22 teams to 20 teams.

Portsmouth finished runners up the season they reduced the premiership to 20 clubs the first time, and there was only 1 automatic promotion plce, and then lost in the playoffs.
