Prior to the the invention of ocean-going ships, people came to North America only across the Bering land bridge. This thin strip of land and ice existed only for brief periods during the last ice age, so there was limited opportunity to move to North America.
And, of course, once people were here, they did tend to want to drive away newcomers.

If I getting this, I guess race, religious persuasion, hatred of Pilgrims, war ( I bet the Japenese and Germans had a hard time during ww2).
