Literary agents do not represent poets. Nor should you pay to get your book published (that's called vanity publishing, and it makes it very difficult to get your book reviewed or sold in shops). What you have to do is (first, take a deep breath): get your work out there, in magazines (listed in Writer's Digest, or check your local bookstores and library), on the radio, at readings. You could make a chapbook, which is a simple photocopied pamphlet you put together yourself - many big cities have zine fairs and shops that sell these kind of pamphlets. When you have amassed a fair number of publications, send a sample of your work and a CV of your publications and readings to a small press that has a poetry list: these will indeed be listed in Writer's Digest. However, if you are serious about poetry, you will know many of them already as you will be reading and buying their books in order to improve your craft. If you are looking for a quick fix solution, you should reconsider, as the poetry world is fiercely competitive and has very high standards.

You need a literary agent to pitch your book to a publisher, unless you want to publish it yourself.

To find a literay agent, purchase a copy of Writer's Digest, it also lists publishers.
