If you're looking away from Edinburgh, definitely go to Skye.
Absolutely beautiful. We stayed at Elgol in a lovely cottage for the week. Just down the way where we stayed you could see across the sea to other isles and there was an amazing view of the Cuillins (Mountains). If you happen to do this, make a note of going into Portree.
good luck

I agree with The hedgehog, i'm guessing you'll be spending hogmanay in Edinburgh, the worlds party central on said night. The Scottish borders are very beautiful and I also recommend the towns my prickly friend suggests. What an unusual looking name, where are you from?

If you are staying in Edinburgh I would visit the Scottish Borders. Beautiful villages that you can stay in. Like Kelso, Melrose, Galashields and Jedburgh.
Tourist information on Princes Street will advise you and help book up accomodation.
Have a lovely time.

Stay in South Queensferry great place to chill. The person who said Skye is a town is stupid. It is an Island which is very far away from the capital. Hope you have a good time all the same.

Come further up North to the Highlands. Fort Augustus and Drumnadrochit always have a lot going on and there are plenty of places to stay, but book ahead to make sure. Go to www.visitScotland.com to find accommodation.
Happy New Year!
