it's to late now ...cats and dogs are domesticated ...if dogs were to be set free can you imagine how many people would be bitten how many dustbins would be overturned we would be scared to go out ....cats are pretty free anyway ..ours goes out through the dog flap and over the fence exploring ..he knows there is always food here for him so he doesn't have to scrounge or starve to death. we have a guineapig and hamster ...they are not the prey of other animals they are in a cage and safe and they are fed and exercised and loved...they have all they need ...all our animals are loved and they show us love ...they can be a stress releif ...sitting talking to them and cuddling can be relaxing ...i don't believe in the capture of larger animals as in zoo's as they need the space of jungles/reservations ....but then when you hear of the shooting of such animals then perhaps the ones in zoo's are really the lucky ones and if looked after won't become extinct. as with all caged animals in some ways it looks sad but then if you look at it from other points of view then it can be a good thing ...so long as the owners to those animals respect them and look after them in everyway you should. people who starve them/hit them etc should be found and band from keeping animals for life

I feel it is cruel to import any animal to be a pet - journeys are extremely stressful and as the only reason is to entertain a human, I strongly object.
I do not think that it is cruel to keep other animals as pets in clean and spacious conditions although I personally do not take pleasure in seeing a fish in a bowl or a bird in a cage.
Many animals form a bond with their human carers and as long as all their needs are met the arrangement is mutually beneficial. Other animals do not form bonds (eg spiders, snakes etc) and I would not chose such animals as a pet as I cannot see anyway that there living as my pet would benefit them. Over the years domesticated breeds of dog, cat and rabbits etc have been breed until they are reliant on human care.

interesting question...i think about this alot too. when i was a little girl, my family had 2 birds in a cage. i hated that. i vowed never to own a bird. they should never be kept in a cage. i feel the same way about rabbits, etc. but dogs and cats are different. i'm a dog lover, and have 2. they love the house and the yard. i take them to dog parks and for walks. we play in the yard, and in the house. they sleep on the bed, and lay under the piano when i play. i think these animals are an exception, as they form loving bonds with humans. birds and bunnies don't love you -- they are trapped.

What is with all the animal rights related questions lately? I think I have seen at least 4 today, maybe more.

To answer your question, yes we should keep pets. They enrich the lives of people who own them, they help out the blind, the elderly, the lost, they give others a reason to live. Pets help humans in many more ways then most people realize.

Becoming pets has been the evolutionary success of cats and dogs. By being useful to or endeared by man, they enjoy shelter, food, protection and even medication for which most pets have to make little effort. How many wild cats and wolves are there left in the UK? Cats especially have created a role for themselves in western society that puts many of them in better positions than their human servants.

first, check over ur grammar.
second, of course we should keep our pets. no they weren't made to live in cages, bowls, etc. but their actions lead to such treatment. It's not our fault that some animals are in cages. It's pretty much based on their behavior. It's also sad importing pets because it will make them feel like they have no permanent home if they keep getting imported.

if you dont put fish in the tank or bowl or pond, they are not pets any more.

cats and dogs, they have freedom even you keep them at home.

Exception - For birds , it should not be kept because they are meant to be free and flying...

I know for a fact that ferrets are an endangered animal in the wild, most if they are seen are killed. Besides, I treat mine as good as I do my kids. So they are not locked in a cage 24/7, they even go for walks and car rides.

importing them is very wrong. if ure gonna keep a pet it should have been bred in captivity or domestically like dogs etc. it is only properly wrong when you want i wild animal for a pet that isnt mean to be kept away from its natural life, like a giraffe or polar bear. its just not nice.
