I recently replaced the tub spout in our master bath. The spout works fine until the plunger thing is pulled to direct the water to the shower head. When the shower head is on, the connection to the spout seems to leak a little (Were the tub spout pipe connects to the tub spout fixture - not inside the wall). I'm thinking that I need some tephlon tape at the connection. I want to remove the spout but it's on pretty tight and I'm afraid that I may damage or loosen the connection inside the wall. How is the tub spout pipe that comes out of the wall connected inside the wall? Can that connection be loosened when you untighten the tub spout piece? I just want to be sure I don't get a leak inside the wall. My house is newer construction and was built 4 years ago.

The connection in the wall could be threaded or soldered. An yes it can come loose.

If its threaded you can re thread using Teflon. If you want to confirm that there are no leaks, put a cap on the end and turn the water on. Use a flash light to look in the wall and see if any water is dripping. After you confirm the fitting is not leaking remove the cap and install the tub spout with Teflon.

If the fitting is soldered it should not come apart. If it does you will have to open the wall to fix it.

These types of shower diverter tub spouts ALWAYS leak a bit of water when you use the shower. Inside there is a flapper that closes off the tub spout and these flappers are not made to seal tight.

I don't think you need to remove the spout but if you really feel you need to, look under the spout and see if there is a set screw. If there is loosen it and pull off the spout. If there is no set screw then just twist off (counter clockwise) the spout.

the pipe is most likely soldered, but the spout is made to screw on and off. You can purchase a rubber strap wrench to unscrew the spout , just go slow and loosen it tighten back and forth and it will give way. If you do not want to purchase the wrench, take a towel and wrap it around the spout and use a standard plumbers wrench.
