interestingly enough the phrase red neck come from the british army serving in south africa. the boers used to call them roi neck literally red neck beccause they wore collars in the blazing sun and they got sunburn hence red neck.

red is a certainly common colour because it was cheap to produce at the time. it may also be the reason why brown trousers were worn by some armies.
