No to the same exent it used to be. Most people don't care about marrying and associating with their own "class" these days, check out jane austins pride and prejudice for ideas of the importance of class a while back.
But, class system still counts, would a rich lawyer with all the connections marry a poor girl from "the wrong sde of the tracks"?

The class system is the same as it used to be, two classes the rich and the poor. The middle class was a ploy to make poor people feel like they were getting somewhere.

Physical classifications of objects to know its durability, its usefulness good or bad qualities are normal and important in our way of life. The psychological classification about race, social,religious beliefs that a group is saved and the others are not, discrimination base on rich and poor status, ignorant and learned, high and low status these are all illusions created by our limited mentality. We are dividing the world psychologically and this is one of the causes of war. This psychological classifications are not important.

Depends on the society and nation.
In Australia we are suppossedly very egalitarian
Whereas places like India suppossedly are still very Caste based

just try buying a plasma tv from best buy with less-than-perfect credit......
the system is the same... the importance is the same...
we just like to think we are beyond petty judgements.
