I am sure that is decided when they negotiate their individual contracts.

Prize winnings anymore are just a 'drop-in-the-bucket'. The "Real" money comes from the Sponsors the Driver or Team can bring aboard. Just recently heard that one NASCAR NEXTEL CUP 'backmarker' driver is guaranteed $18 Million a year from a major Corporation, regardless how he does. Poor Danica Patrick ONLY makes $7 Million a year from Corporate Sponsorship deals, no wonder She and her Dad is taking a hard look at NASCAR. How do you think Michael Andretti was able to go Formula One in 1993, he brought aboard KMART.

There as many answers as there are drivers and teams, not one specific way of doing it. It all depends on how the contract is written, etc.
