He doesn't want other people to know ya'll are friends. Chances are, he's talking about you badly when your not around. This happened to me once too, have you tried initiating the conversation?

Well online at home in the privacy of his own room his friends can't see him. If you dumped him then he has to act manly in front of his buddies, that is just how they work. Just ignor him at school and see how he reacts. Or better yet, just ask him why he treats you that way. Up front is alot better than playing a game. Good Luck!!

I don't think he added you because he wanted you back. He was probably just being friendly. It has been nine months, you should be over him by now. Ignore him if it makes it easier to move on. Otherwise keep your expectations very low and don't assume anything.

Seems he is being a coward using the privacy of a computer to talk to you although it could be his reasons for ditching you is his friends at school as he seems to want to pretend you dont know him there

That's easy to answer. People are just different online than they are in the real world.
Perhaps he has feelings for you that he can only allow online, but doesn't have the courage to do it in real life.
