It came from the time of this religious cult ran by the reverend
Jim Jones who took about 900 people with him to a place in the New Guinea Jungles of South America and had a commune type place where they tried to be self sufficent. There was reports of corruption and sexual perversion and a Rep went down to investigate the charges and the Representative was killed The
FBI started investigating Jim Jones, and to stopped from being arrested, him and his main people who were helping him run the place had everyone at a meeting and they had vats of Kool Aid
laced with poison and they all committed suicide by drinking the KOOL Aid, so that is where drinking the Kool Aid came from.

In November of 1978, the world was shocked by the suicide deaths of 913 members of the People's Temple cult. Jim Jones, the leader of the group, convinced his followers to move to Jonestown, Guyana, a remote community that Jones carved out of the South American jungle and named after himself. Jones constantly feared losing control of his followers. His paranoia was the main reason he moved the cult to Guyana.
