I got a 3 in 1 crib at Walmart that was wood. It is almost 3 years old and my toddler still uses it (as a crib). I have not noticed it getting dented or scratched...the only blemishes it has is where my toddler gnawed on one of the sides last year when she was teething.

During my baby days, we bought our 2nd crib through a re-sale/consignment shop. These stores tend to research the large products (like cribs) on recalls. We spent around $250 for a white wooden crib. We really didn't need everything to be matchy-matchy in our nursery. Anyway, the crib phase doesn't really last that long, and then you're on to a toddler bed. (so, who really needs a $1000 crib?) Even better news, we sold it back to the consignment shop when our kids were out of the crib stage.
Best of luck!

My historic past track may be the Minstrel teach finished album.. My crib seems in simple terms as stable if not greater effectual than a number of those i've got seen on there so i could use my own..I have been given plasma's and massive monitors too.. i could teach the kitchen, the den, the dwelling and eating room, the grasp suite, the place of work, possibly one or 2 of the customer bedrooms and bogs.. i could run around the lower back backyard bare

Honestly, unless you plan on handing it down, go with one that is cheap and good safety reviews. You can find plenty at wal mart, shopko, target, babies r us.....all of them have reasonable cribs. I would NEVER build my own. You can not test it and have experts look at it before you put your baby in it, and what would you do if something happened to your baby in it? It would be your fault, and that's not something to live with. That's like saying, can I make my own car seat? More babies die in cribs and crib accidents a year than in car accidents. Please, don't build one! Good Luck

A THOUSAND DOLLARS???? Where have you been looking?
Try Babies R Us, Target, Walmart, etc, and their respective websites. We got a nice natural-finish crib at Babies R Us for about $300...

Building your own is not a good idea cuz you have to make sure the slats are the right distance apart, etc.
What about a used one? There are stores that sell just used baby stuff. There are some around here called Childrens Orchard I believe it is a chain.
