I brought my 2004 Chevy Colorado to the shop because the brakes were squeaking excessively loud. I was told that GM has been putting ceramic brakes on all of their new model vehicles.

The reasons for the ceramic breaks is that they wear much slower (90K mile rotations) and work more effectively. However, the downfall is the squeaking noise associated with them.

How do I get these breaks to stop squeaking? I do not want to pay a fortune for this repair either. I just want to stop at a traffic light and not sound like an 18-wheeler.

Mine doesn't have squeaky breaks! Try blowing them out with an air hose. I do that to my motorcycle and it helps to stop squeaking

OK. You have an '04, so it is a late model vehicle, but far from a "new" car. You haven't told us the mileage, but I'm assuming over 30k.
Did this just start, or have you recently acquired this truck?
If you bought it new, and the problem just started, then obviously the squeaking is an indication of a problem, albeit a minor one like brake wear.
If you just bought this truck, you may be experiencing the end result of the former owners usage, also not a big problem. Either way, sounds like you need pads, and possibly rotors, which is just normal maintenance.
So cough up the bucks and have it done.

P.S. I just re-read your question. the notion that these vehicles were "designed with squeaky brakes" is ridiculous.

Ceramic brakes are used to deal with the heat better, dust up less, and make LESS noise than conventional metallic pads.If you are having squeaky brakes, you may have: Rusted caliper components, worn shims/rattle clips, worn out pads (wear sensor scraping),glazed over pads, caliper stuck and not sliding on its pins causing heat buildup and glazing the pad surface.

Sounds like you need a brake job.

Feel lucky you got 3 years out of brakes in a GM truck, many get 6-12 months.

If you think the reason its squeaking is due to the expensive brake pads, buy the cheap pads and see if they do any better...I think you'll find that what others have already mentioned is more true though, its probably not just the pads....

yet another element you're able to do is replace the brakes with a ceramic pad. they do value 2x as plenty, yet will shrink or do away with your brake noise. additionally, despite if it somewhat is a four wheelchronic colorado, you will pay massive $$$ to change your rotors, because it demands removing factors of the four wheelchronic device. turn the rotors on the motor vehicle as long as you may stand it. in ordinary terms a chunk of worth suggestion from somebody who knows!

Sounds like you have a buildup of brake dust. Drive backwards and hit the brakes this will help remove some of the dust.
